Unity of Blue Water to celebrate 25th anniversary Sept. 20
Unity of Blue Water will celebrate its 25th anniversary with two special events Sept. 20 and 21. All past and present members of its spiritual family, and the public, are invited to attend. The dinner celebration will be 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Angry Bull Restaurant in Kimball.
The program will feature tributes and mementoes honoring Unity’s history of 25 years of ministry in the Blue Water area. Dinner tickets are $15 per person and must be reserved in advance by calling (810) 982-2820.
A special 25th Anniversary Sunday Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Unity of Blue Water, 431 17th Street, Port Huron. The service will feature a dialogue between Rev. Kathy Long and the local group’s co-founder Dawn Williams of Fort Gratiot. This dialog will explore what it takes to begin a ministry, the Unity teachings that have had a major influence in the members’ lives, and encouragement to Unity’s spiritual family as they minister together for years to come.
Special music will be performed by the group Ruby Hill, and a gift will be given to all present. The anniversary service is open to the public at no charge.
Unity provides practical teachings to help people live healthy, prosperous and meaningful lives. The spiritual organization was founded in 1889 in Kansas City, Missouri, by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. After Mrs. Fillmore's remarkable healing using prayer and affirmations, many friends became interested in how she accomplished this healing. Unity grew from small prayer circles in living rooms to the worldwide movement it is today.
In January 1989, one hundred years after the birth of the Unity movement, a local group gathered at The Honeycomb health store in Port Huron and started having classes. The original local members were Dawn and Rob Williams, Joyce Gusten, Carol Schoenherr, Bob and Helen Venzia, Eunice Hess, Kathy Thomson, and Peg Lovett.
As the group grew, it moved to having study groups and services at the Disabled American Veterans building on Military Street, Port Huron in July, 1989; to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Gratiot Avenue, Port Huron in January 1990; and to the Harrington Hotel in June 1995. In February 1996, the local Unity group reached the Association of Unity Churches’ status of “Pioneer Church” and moved to the Dungan Clinic building on 10th Avenue, Port Huron.
In July 1998, Unity of Blue Water reached its goal of full church status and purchased its current building at 431 17th Street in Port Huron in December 1998.
Unity’s inclusive and open-minded community encourages personal initiative and growth, and provides a positive path for spiritual living.
Unity of Blue Water currently offers weekly Sunday services and a weekly Children’s Program – Youth in Unity, as well as special classes, workshops, prayer circles and other inspirational and educational activities throughout the year. All are open to the public.
